Friday 25th August 2006: TIJUCA NATIONAL PARK & PEDRO BONITA: Rio De Janeiro, Brasil
On this Friday (our first full sunny day) we decided to take one of the tours recommended by our hostel. The tour included a short trek in the Tijuca National Park and a visit to Corcovado (the mountain with the Jesus Christ statue on it) which is also in the National park, and ended with a visit to the area of Santa Teresa and a tram ride to the business centre of Rio, all for a few reals more than the price of just visiting Corcovado.
At 10am the day began and after everyone had been picked up from their various hostels (there were ten of us in all), we headed straight for Tijuca National Park. From here we took a forty-five minute steep walk through the park, up to the top of Pedro Bonita (520 metres) which was quite difficult due to the heat and strong sun but it was also lovely walking through the beautiful park admiring the views along the way. Once we reached the top we were unable to see nothing but clouds but thankfully they soon passed and we were able to have a great views of the entire city of Rio De Janeiro.
