Sunday 17th September 2006: LA BOMBONERA FOOTBALL STADIUM: Buenos Aires, Argentina
As with Rio De Janeiro, we couldn´t visit Buenos Aires without seeing a football match. We went to see Boca Juniors (the most famous team of Argentina and also Maradonna´s old team) versus Goody Cruz at La Bombonera stadium. Again we were fortunate enough to witness a big match between huge rival clubs. During the week Boca had just won the SudAmericana cup for the third time (the only team to ever achieve this) so there was a huge celebration (which included half naked cheerleaders!) before the match to congratulate the team. Consequently the stadium was rammed of fans all singing and jumping up and down in jubilation. Normally this display of emotion would be part of the fun of going to a football match but not today! We were seated right at the very top of the stadium looking down whilst it swayed in time to the fans movement which was all bit scary and not much for Celina!
The match ended in a 0 - 0 draw which was annoying not to see any goals (especially when it was such a hyped up game) but we did get to see some great displays of Argentine footballing flair as well as the usual rolling around on the floor faking attacks (footballers need to some rugby lessons to toughen them up!). Overall the whole experience was rather disappointing when we compared it to the match we saw at the Maracana, however we were still glad to have experienced a live Argentine football match.
